A Carnival of Reaction: Birth of the Border and the Boundary Commission with Cormac Moore

From its inclusion in the Anglo-Irish Treaty of December 1921 of the shelving of its report four years later in December 1925, the Boundary Commission resulted in a ‘carnival of reaction’ from Ulster unionists, Irish nationalists and British governments. Instead of drastically reducing northern territory that could have paved the way for Irish unity, this talk shows how the Boundary Commission resulted in no change to the border due to Irish nationalism’s naivety, Ulster unionism’s intransigence and British governments’ duplicity.

Dr Cormac Moore is an historian-in-residence with Dublin City Council and a columnist with the Irish News who also edits its ‘On This Day’ segment. He had published widely on Irish history, including the book, ‘Birth of the Border: Impact of Partition in Ireland’ (Merrion Press, 2019).
