Translating Age: Being a Migrant and Older Woman In Northern Ireland

May 15 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Free

The Translating Age project is a collaborative initiative funded by Queen’s University that brings together older migrant women living in Northern Ireland. Started in autumn 2023, this project has provided a platform for the participants to explore and express their experiences through various forms of media, including prose, knitting, photography, and more. Guided by Professor Tess Maginess, the project director, participants have engaged in discussions and creative processes to share what it means to be a woman, a migrant woman, and an older woman in today’s Northern Ireland.

The event will be presented by Dr Federica Ferrieri, the project coordinator and designer of the website, and offers a unique opportunity to learn about the project’s journey, hear from the participants themselves, and engage in meaningful discussions with a diverse audience.

About Professor Tess Maginess

Professor Tess Maginess has a background in literature, driving her exploration of the application of narrative voice concepts in lifelong learning. Her focus is on encouraging greater student engagement, particularly among mature students and non-traditional learners. Professor Maginess has spearheaded numerous action research projects in the community, employing creative approaches such as film, drama, and multimedia forms to facilitate education on challenging subjects like mental health and illness.

Her research extends beyond literature to encompass voicing, student engagement, and active learning. This includes contributions to the co-construction of curriculum and co-research initiatives. Her interdisciplinary endeavours involve bridging the realms of medicine, health, and literature to generate new insights. An exemplary instance of this interdisciplinary work is her exploration of the representation of dementia in literature.
