Eighteen and a Half Years: Ordinary Young Men, Extraordinary Times

(ACT Initiative)

A series of boards stylised as silhouettes of young men, each wrapped with the testimonies of men who joined the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) in their youth. The oral histories contained in this exhibition derive from the PhD thesis of the same name by Dr. William Mitchell, Project Director at Act Initiative. Of those interviewed, the average age at the time of joining the UVF was eighteen and a half years old; thus the name of the paper and exhibition.

In the centre of the room is a model of the UVF on parade at Long Kesh.
